Street Food in Seoul

There are many types of street food in Seoul. So much so that I doubt any tourist will go hungry when they explore the streets.

I am going to share with you 4 street snacks which we had while we are in Seoul. This list is not exhaustive and will increase when we visit Seoul again! :)

GyeRan Bbang (계란 빵)

We have seen this ubiquitous street snack, also known as Egg Bread, or Egg Muffins everywhere. They are served piping hot and taste a bit like French toast. The 아줌마 - Ajumma (means Auntie in Korean) serves them piping hot by placing a whole egg inside an oval shaped mould filled with flour mixture. Personally, I would prefer it more flavourful but it is a great snack especially when it gets cold! It is not every expensive and priced around 1,000 won.

Tteokbokki (떡볶이)

Tteokbokki is a beloved Korean dish and is sold everywhere. Literally translated as "stir-fried rice cake", Tteokbokki is made with Garaetteok which is cylinder-shaped chewy white rice cakes. Anchovy broth is typically but water is used as well. I did not manage to try this but the feedbacks I get was that the Tteokbokki sold in the streets is cooked in water and therefore lacked in favour. Do note that the spicy level varies a lot depending on the brand of red chili pepper paste (Gochujang) and red chili pepper flakes (Gochugaru) used.

Hotteok (호떡)

Hotteok is made with fried glutinous rice dough (made with glutinous rice flour also known as sweet rice flour) and filled with melted brown sugar or Cinnamon. Some Ajumma even used nuts with syrups in their Hotteok. Hotteok is also priced around 1,000 won.

 Poop Pastry (똥빵)

We chanced upon this poop shaped pastry while in Insa-dong (인사동). It is filled with red bean paste which makes this poopy treat...erm...extra interesting. I suspect that this snack is similar to  Bungeoppang (붕어빵 / 잉어빵).

Bungeoppang (붕어빵 / 잉어빵) is another traditional Korean snack made into the shape of a goldfish and also filled with red bean paste. It is mildly favoured but I didn't crave for more after 1 helping.
